Enigmatic Stigmata

Patricia Arquette, ©Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

"Enigmatic."† That's the only word that comes close to seizing the essence of the stirring performances and rousing visuals that comprise Rupert Wainwright's 1999 film Stigmata.

Much in the spirit of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, Stimata challenges the dogmatic institution of the Catholic Church in favor of the core values of Christianity.† Utilizing a potent motif mixture of miracles, science, faith and possession, the plot effectively leads the audience to a masterful denouement, where the truth -- as it were -- that unravels is ironic, striking and believable.

Montrèal "Cooks"

montreal.jpgJesse Cook's album Gravity proclaims his unique sound as "Rumba Flamenco World Beat Jazz Pop." What a mouthful. Now, many of my friends consider my taste in music to be "eclectic." I like some rock, some alternative, some R&B, some pop, some classical and some jazz/vocal. I really like new age and "world/folk" music. My favorite artists masterfully blend different genres together to produce that indescribable harmonious sound that invariably creates the perfect soundtrack to work to, play to, and relax by.

McKennitt's Ancient Muse: "Harmonious, Integrated Diversity"

ancientmuse.jpg I recently downloaded Loreena McKennitt's new album, Ancient Muse, from the iTunes Store . Loreena McKennitt's penchant for Celtic music is infused with an homage toward the intercultural interactions in the Holy Land. The download came with a digital booklet, that for its fascinating read, was practically worth the value of the CD itself!

The Scottish Play at Milwaukee Shakespeare

Macbeth "Fair is foul and foul is fair." One of Shakespeare's darkest darkest tragedies served as Milwaukee Shakespeare's premier production in 1999, and was its inaugural production in the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center of the Arts in Brookfield, representing a new era of successful ventures by this forward-looking company that brings the timeless austerity of the Bard to modern day masses. In a word, "spectacle" captures the essence of this production that explores the ambitious human drive for power, that despite its trappings, still seems to entangle leaders and would-be leaders today.

Milwaukee Rep's Tartuffe

Lee Ernst as TartuffeWhen I start talking about Moliere's Tartuffe in my IB Theatre classes, my students grin, smirk and roll their eyes, because they know it's a play I love to prattle on about! The particular English translation by Richard Wilbur upholds the linguistic integrity of heroic couplets and diction to truly enhance the often farcical nature of the play.

Tarantino Hits the Mark with "Kill Bill"

Kill Bill PosterOkay. So I'm behind the times. As usual, my inspiration for cultural exposure comes vis-a-vis my students. In this case, a few of them brought in excerpts of Kill Bill as exhibits of Japanese culture at the beginning of the IB Theatre 1 noh theatre unit.
