Okay. So I'm behind the times. As usual, my inspiration for cultural exposure comes vis-a-vis my students. In this case, a few of them brought in excerpts of Kill Bill as exhibits of Japanese culture at the beginning of the IB Theatre 1 noh theatre unit.
When I start talking about Moliere's Tartuffe in my IB Theatre classes,
my students grin, smirk and roll their eyes, because they know it's a
play I love to prattle on about! The particular English translation by
Richard Wilbur upholds the linguistic integrity of heroic couplets and
diction to truly enhance the often farcical nature of the play.
"Fair is foul and foul is fair." One of Shakespeare's darkest darkest tragedies served as Milwaukee Shakespeare's premier production in 1999, and was its inaugural production in the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center of the Arts in Brookfield, representing a new era of successful ventures by this forward-looking company that brings the timeless austerity of the Bard to modern day masses. In a word, "spectacle" captures the essence of this production that explores the ambitious human drive for power, that despite its trappings, still seems to entangle leaders and would-be leaders today.
Forensics celebrates our democratic society by encouraging dissent, which can often persuade people's views enough to sway their position on an issue. What distinguishes Student Congress among other debate events is that it uses a practicable framework for discourse through parliamentary procedure. "Parli Pro," as it's abbreviated, is a useful tool for allowing for fair discussion of issues, and most importantly, protecting the free speech rights of the minority before a "majority rules" vote is taken. The key word in the previous sentence is "tool," which is what gives procedure the potential to help build effective debate in a chamber, or be the proverbial wrench that slows debate to a halt.
